New documents reveal that R. Kelly owes almost $5m (£3.2m) in unpaid taxes.

The Chicago Sun-Times has reported that documents filed by the Internal Revenue Service show that the R&B star owes taxes dating back to 2005.

The 45-year-old singer was forced to sell his Chicago mansion last year after it became the subject of a legal action over unpaid mortgage payments.

In 2011 he underwent emergency throat surgery. He releases his 11th album later this month.

According to tax records seen by the Chicago Sun-Times, Kelly paid $2.6m ($1.6m) dollars in back taxes in 2008.

However, despite paying a further $1m in back taxes last year, the singer still owes the US federal government more than $4.8 (£2.9) million, according to the documents.
Wilmette-based tax attorney Steven Blanc, a former IRS trial attorney who also has worked for a Hollywood law firm, said even millionaires find themselves coming up short at tax time — especially entertainers.

“They have managers, who are supposed to be watching their money,” he said. “But when you get a call from your client at midnight and they’re at a dealership and they ask you: ‘Is it OK for me to buy a Lamborghini?’ (the manager) always says yes, even if there’s no money in the checking account. Because if they don’t say yes, they get fired.”!
