Fergie Explains Black Eyed Peas’ Connection To ‘Dirty Dancing’ Track
‘We really feel like we have had the time of our lives together,’ Fergie says of ‘The Time’ sample.

How do you top a smash album like The E.N.D.? Well, you take it back to The Beginning. That’s just what the Black Eyed Peas intend to do on their November 30 release, the follow-up to their chart-topping, party-anthem-packed 2009 release.

“You should expect deeper, a little bit darker electro beats and a little bit more of relationship issues on this one, a little bit more touching on that,” Fergie told MTV News at the Glamour Women of the Year celebration, where she was being honored on Monday night. “But darker beats and a lot of funny stuff, as well, a lot of funny stuff.”

The group has already given fans a taste of what that means in the form of the album’s first single, the super-techno dance track “The Time (Dirty Bit),” which samples the iconic theme from “Dirty Dancing,” “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.”

Fergie said the song sort of sums up the current vibe of the group.

“I think it’s crazy the way the world works, because [‘Dirty Dancing’ star] Jennifer Grey is now on ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ and for some reason that song kind of meant something to us, because we kind of have had an amazing run. I mean, it just keeps going and it keeps going,” she explained of the sample’s significance.

“And we really feel like we have had the time of our lives together, and it’s kind of weird how the world works,” she continued about the funky track. “And that song reminds me of [Grey] and ‘Dirty Dancing’ and that whole time, so it’s just, I don’t know, it all fit.”
