Lil Wayne Comment On New York Comment Was A Big Deal
In August 2012, Lil Wayne made a comment that he didn’t like New York and everyone got all bent out of shape. Well, if Weezy’s naysayers were looking to get his attention, they have to do a little bit better, because the YMCMB boss says he was completely unaware of the fall-out in the Big Apple. “I have to be honest with you, dog: All I do is work, and I swear to God, I don’t even know the reaction,” Wayne told MTV News on Thursday morning (October 18). “If I knew the reaction I’d know how to be able to answer that question, but I don’t know the reaction. I just say what I want to say, do what I want to do and f— who don’t like it.” So let’s jog Wayne’s memory. Back in August, after he performed alongside Nicki Minaj at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC, MTV News caught up with Tunechi and asked for his feelings after the show and he described it as “awesome” despite his disdain for performing in New York following his gun arrest at the Beacon Theater. “Flat out: I don’t like New York,” Wayne said after the show. While many understood that Weezy’s statement stemmed from his arrest and ultimate incarceration in New York, others, like State Sen. Malcolm Smith, expressed outrage and demanded an apology from the larger-than-life rap star — a request that went unanswered. Even Brooklyn rapper and Weezy collaborator Fabolous weighed in on the issue, but Fab didn’t hold a press conference like Sen. Smith did. Instead, he hit the studio to record “So NY,” a hometown ode that references Wayne’s controversial comment. “I’m so New York, Weezy probably don’t like me,” Fab raps on the song’s hook. While the track — more witty than dis-heavy — is garnering radio spins in New York, Wayne says he hasn’t heard the song. It isn’t that he has a problem with Fab, he’s just too busy perfecting his own craft. “Nah, I don’t listen to nothin’ else but myself, ’cause I’m just tryin’ to get better,” explained Weezy who is preparing his upcoming I Am Not a Human Being II LP. “I always listen to what I could’ve said or done better, so I’m sorry.” |
