Lil Wayne (born Dwayne Carter) was released from Rikers Island in New York this morning (November 4) after serving 8 months out of a one-year prison sentence for gun possession.

A guard initially told MTV Weezy would have to serve an extra day due to “miscalculated time,” but a spokesperson from Rikers Island confirmed that the rapper was freed at 8:35 a.m.

It’s sure been an eventful jail stint for Wayne. The rapper reached a plea deal on drug charges in Yuma County, Arizona only weeks into his incarceration. Yuma authorities initially issued a bench warrant for his arrest despite him being locked up in another state. The case ended with Wayne getting 36 months’ probation. He also made news after getting caught with contraband when guards found him with earphones and a watch that doubled as an MP3 player.

Needless to say, all eyes were on Wayne in Rikers. Back in April, news surfaced that a correctional officer was fired for allegedly spying on Wayne while another guard was investigated for special treatment five months later. Just last week, Captain Raphael Collazzo was suspended for 10 days without pay for paying an unauthorized visit to Wayne while the rapper was in solitary confinement.

Wayne’s also enjoyed his share of triumphs in the last eight months as his Young Money crew kept waving the flag proudly. Drizzy emerged into a full-fledged star with his “Thank Me Later” debut, while Nicki Minaj has become the game’s most buzz-worthy femcee in years, breaking several records in the process.

Wayne’s music has also been ubiquitous throughout his incarceration. In addition to appearing on countless songs and videos, the rapper’s own “I’m Not a Human Being,” which hit stores on his birthday (September 27), debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard charts. Behind bars, Wayne made enough noise to rank 7th on MTV’s Annual Hottest MCs in the Game list. He also ranked 2nd on BET’s Top 10 Rappers of the 21st Century.

According to the Cash Money/Young Money camp, Wayne will get back to work on “Tha Carter IV” upon being released. The LP’s scheduled to hit stores in 2011. It’s also been rumored that Wayne could be appearing on the final date of Drake’s Light Dreams and Nightmares tour in Las Vegas on Saturday, November 6. Per MTV, Wayne is scheduled to celebrate his homecoming at a Miami Strip Club on the next day.
